多分これはうまくいくはずです：

XmlSerializer xs = new XmlSerializer(typeof(List<SearchResult>));

実際、このメッセージは、xmlに単一の検索結果ではなくsearchrestultのコレクションが含まれていると思わせます。

[編集]DJKRAZEは正しいです。このコードは、「results」変数が種類であると想定していますList<SearchResult>。シリアライザーは、シリアライズするオブジェクトのタイプと一致する必要があります。
